SWOT Personal Analysis

“Become addicted to constant and never-ending self-improvement.”  ~ Anthony J. D’Angelo

SWOT is an acronym for Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat’ and its analysis is widely used in the corporate world to evaluate the position of a company. However, a SWOT analysis can also be applied to evaluate your personal self with the aim of self-improvement and pursuing career goals.

How is this done?

By analyzing all the steps and considerations that must be taken to realize your own self. For this, you need to honestly answer questions about yourself within the SWOT framework. If you feel you cannot be objective about yourself then take the help of a friend or a colleague.

Remember, you are more likely to succeed in life if you are able to exploit your talents to the fullest. You will also face fewer problems if you are aware of your weaknesses and how you can manage them so that they wouldn’t matter in the long-term.

A SWOT analysis can also uncover new opportunities for you and help you eliminate any threats that could hamper your progress.

Here are the following questions you should ask yourself:

Strengths

  • What am I good at?
  • What are my professional qualifications that give me an edge over others?
  • What are my outstanding skills?
  • What are my unique abilities?
  • How do people (especially superiors) perceive my strengths?
  • Am I part of a network that no one else knows about and it provides me a distinctive advantage?

Weaknesses

  • What are my undesirable habits?
  • How do others perceive my weakness?
  • What tasks do I avoid because I don’t feel confident enough for them?
  • Do I have any negative work habits? (being often late to office, short temper, disorganized etc)
  • Do I have any traits that hold me back in my field? (For example, having poor public speaking skills)

Opportunities

  • What technology could I use to improve my skillset?
  • What skill (s) should I gain to make myself more competent in my field?
  • Is my industry a mature one or a nascent one? Can I take advantage of the current market situation?
  • Do I have a solid network to help or advise me for all sorts of situation?
  • Can I do something different for my customers that will increase the loyalty factor?

 Threats

  • What are the obstacles that I face in work?
  • Are there any new technologies that can replace my profile?
  • Are my personal traits hampering my progress?
  • Are people performing significantly better than me?
  • What are the external threats to my market?

Outcome and Action

You can determine the outcome of your analysis by matching the strengths with the opportunities, and weaknesses with threats. This is turn will transform into action in those areas where you feel you can be more aggressive to get more positive results. You will also be able to convert your negatives into positives and evaluate what steps you need to take and what skills you need to gain to gain the competitive edge.
